Etymology: < French oh là là (1863 or earlier; also as hô la la (1867 or earlier), ô là là (1896 or earlier)) < oh oh int. (compare also ooh int.) + là là , reduplication of (interjection and adverb) there < classical Latin illāc over there (also as illā ), use as adverb of ablative feminine singular of ille that man, he (see illeism n.). Compare Middle French hola (1350; French holà), Spanish hola (1552 as ola).
Frequently in French contexts or in contexts stereotypically associated with France.
