Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Ophidia.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Ophidia (also Ophidii , P. A. Latreille in Nouveau dict. d'hist. naturelle (1804) XXIV. 66; either < ancient Greek ὄϕις serpent (see ophio- comb. form) + scientific Latin -ia -ia suffix2, on the mistaken supposition that ὄϕις had a stem ὀϕιδ- , as λεπιδ- , λεπίς scale, or < ancient Greek ὀϕίδια , plural of ὀϕίδιον small snake: see Ophidion n.), after French Ophidiens (A. Brongniart 1800, in Bull. des Sci. par la Soc. Philomatique de Paris 2 81). Compare earlier ophidian n. and adj.Formed to provide a term in -ia, analogous to Reptilia, Sauria, Crocodilia, etc.
Zoology.
With singular agreement: a suborder of reptiles comprising the snakes, within the order Squamata. With plural agreement (also ophidia): snakes; snakes collectively.The name Serpentes is now usually used for this suborder, but some authorities still prefer the older name Ophidia.
