Etymology: < Middle French, French ophiogenes, plural (1562 in Du Pinet, Holland's probable immediate source in quot. 1601) and its etymon classical Latin Ophiogenēs (also Ophiogenīs), plural noun < Hellenistic Greek Ὀϕιογενεῖς , plural noun, use as noun of plural of ὀϕιογενής snake-born < ὀϕιο- ophio- comb. form + -γενής -gen comb. form.
Classical Mythology.
(Members of) mythological tribes said to be related to serpents and able to cure snakebites.

1995 E. Dench Barbarians to New Men ii. v. 165 [Pliny mentions] the Ophiogenes of Cyrus, who reputedly exposed their new-born children to the bite of poisonous snakes in order to test their wives' fidelity.
