单词 ophiolatry
释义

ophiolatryn.

Brit. /ˌɒfɪˈɒlətri/, U.S. /ˌɑfiˈɑlətri/, /ˌoʊfiˈɑlətri/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: ophio- comb. form, -latry comb. form.
Etymology: < ophio- comb. form + -latry comb. form. Compare French ophiolâtrie (1721).Compare the following early formations reflecting ancient Greek λατρεία worship (see -latry comb. form):1794 R. J. Sulivan View of Nature II. xl iv. 281 The first variation from the purer zabaism consisted in the ophilatreia, or worship of the serpent.1845 Encycl. Metrop. XXIV. 494/2 A religion once so prevalent as Ophiolatreia may be reasonably expected to have left some traces of its rites and temples. The form ophilatreia is perhaps immediately < ancient Greek ὄϕις serpent (see ophio- comb. form) rather than the combining form ophio- comb. form.
The worship of serpents; also (rarely) as a count noun.
