Brit. /ˌɒfɪˈɒfəɡəs/, U.S. /ˌɑfiˈɑfəɡəs/, /ˌoʊfiˈɑfəɡəs/

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin Ophiophagī, Ophiophagus.
Etymology: In sense 1 < classical Latin Ophiophagī (masculine plural), literally ‘the snake-eaters’, used as the name of an African people, probably < Byzantine Greek ὀϕιοϕάγος snake-eating (see note) < Hellenistic Greek ὀϕιο- ophio- comb. form + ancient Greek -ϕάγος (see -phagous comb. form). In sense 2 < scientific Latin Ophiophagus, genus name ( A. C. L. G. Günther Reptiles Brit. India (1864) 340). Compare French ophiophage (noun) person who eats snakes (1721).The Greek word is first recorded in the Lexicon of Suidas, but its appearance in Pliny suggests that it may have existed earlier in Greek.
