Etymology: < scientific Latin Ophiopogon (J. B. Ker Gawler 1808, in Curtis's Bot. Mag. 27 1063) < Hellenistic Greek ὀϕιο- ophio- comb. form + ancient Greek πώγων beard (see pogonology n.).

Botany.

A genus of evergreen herbaceous perennials of the family Convallariaceae (or Liliaceae), native to parts of South-East Asia from India to Japan and cultivated elsewhere as ornamental or ground-covering plants, which form mats of long, narrow, grasslike leaves; (also ophiopogon) a plant of this genus, esp. O. japonicus. Cf. mondo n.²
