Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Ophitae.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Ophitae (late 2nd or early 3rd cent. in Tertullian) < Hellenistic Greek Ὀϕῖται , plural of Ὀϕίτης < ancient Greek ὄϕις serpent (see ophio- comb. form) + -ίτης -ite suffix1. Compare French ophite (1688 in the passage translated in quot. 1692 at main sense). N.E.D. (1903) gives the pronunciation as (ǫ·fəit) /ˈɒfaɪt/.
Church History.
A member of an early Gnostic sect which worshipped the serpent.According to the Ophites, the serpent in the story of the fall (Genesis 3) symbolized a higher god, who illuminates and liberates humankind.
