Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek ὀϕθαλμός , -ite suffix1.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ὀϕθαλμός eye (see ophthalmo- comb. form) + -ite suffix1. In sense 1a perhaps after French ophtalmite (1803); in sense 1b after German Ophthalmit (1948 in this sense in the passage translated in quot. 1954 at sense 1b).Compare the following earlier use of ophthalmites (compare post-classical Latin -ites : see -ite suffix1), apparently denoting a stone resembling an eye (compare eye-stone n. at eye n.1 Compounds 4):1677 R.
