单词 oppositive
释义

oppositiveadj.n.

Brit. /əˈpɒzᵻtɪv/, U.S. /əˈpɑzədɪv/
Forms: late Middle English opposityf, 1500s (Scottish) 1600s 1800s– oppositive, 1500s–1600s oppositiue, 1600s oppositife.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin opposit- , oppōnere , -ive suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin opposit-, past participial stem of oppōnere to set against (see oppone v., oppose v.) + -ive suffix. Compare post-classical Latin oppositivus (of motion) that tends in the opposite direction, contrary (a1250 in a British source), (of person) who opposes himself or herself against c1327 in a British source), French oppositif (1665 as adjective and noun in astronomical sense in apparently isolated use; subsequently from 1838).
