Etymology: < Middle French, French oppressif (1365) and its etymon post-classical Latin oppressivus involving or of the nature of oppression (c1250, 1304 in British sources) < classical Latin oppress- , past participial stem of opprimere (see oppress v.) + -īvus -ive suffix. Compare earlier oppressing adj.
1. Weighing heavily on the mind, spirits, or senses; burdensome; overwhelming; constrictive; depressing; spec. (of weather conditions, etc.) unpleasantly hot and close; stifling.
