Etymology: Shortened < post-classical Latin opere citato in the work quoted, ablative of opus citatum < classical Latin opus work (see opus n.) + citātum , neuter singular of citātus , past participle of citāre cite v.The form opere citato does not appear to be used in Latin before the 18th cent., and is uncommon even then, whereas the synonymous opere laudato appears to be more frequent (classical Latin laudāre is likewise more common than citāre in the sense ‘identify, refer to by name’). In vernacular texts, however, the influence of cite v. and its cognates has led to op. cit. being used much more widely than op. laud. , the latter being largely restricted to the technical writings of classicists and medievalists. Learned texts in post-classical Latin of the 17th and 18th cent. sometimes use the more common loc. cit. followed by volume and page numbers, i.e. to mean ‘in the same work’ (where modern usage requires op. cit. ) rather than ‘in the same passage’ (see loc. cit. adv.).
