Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Opalinidae.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Opalinidae, family name (1880 or earlier) < Opalina , genus name (J. E. Purkinje & G. Valentin De Phaenomeno Generali & Fundamentali Motus Vibratorii Continui (1835) iv. 43; < opalus opal n. + -ina -ine suffix¹: so named from the opalescent appearance of these organisms under the microscope) + -idae (see -id suffix³).

A protozoan of the group Opalinata, which comprises ciliated organisms parasitic in the intestines of lower vertebrates, esp. frogs and toads.Formerly regarded as ciliates, the Opalinata have recently been treated variously as a phylum, as a subphylum of the Sarcomastigophora, and as a class of the Zoomastigophora.
