Etymology: Probably variously < Serbian and Croatian opanka, feminine noun (now rare or regional), Slovene opanka, and the corresponding masculine nouns Serbian and Croatian opanak, Slovene opanek (all < Serbian and Croatian, opeti and its cognate Slovene opeti to put on); originally via Italian opanka (1774 in the passage translated in quot. 1778). Compare Bulgarian opinăk, Macedonian opinak, Romanian opincă, Albanian opingë, Albanian regional opangë. Compare also French opanke, opanké (plural opanki; 1820).The plural forms with -e- reflect the plural opanke of the feminine nouns Serbian and Croatian opanka and Slovene opanka; opanci and opanki are the plural forms of the respective masculine nouns, Serbian and Croatian opanak and Slovene opanek.
A kind of Balkan footwear made of soft leather, similar to a moccasin and fastened with straps.
