单词 opaque
释义

opaqueadj.n.

Brit. /ə(ʊ)ˈpeɪk/, U.S. /oʊˈpeɪk/
Forms: late Middle English 1600s– opake, 1600s opace, 1600s–1700s opac, 1600s– opaque, 1700s opaac.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: Latin opācus; French opaque.
Etymology: In quot. ?1440 at sense A. 1a < classical Latin opācus (see below); in subsequent use < Middle French, French opaque (c1500 in sense A. 1, 1516 in sense A. 2, c1590 in figurative use; compare Middle French opac (1464–1506), oppacque (beginning of the 16th cent.)) and its etymon classical Latin opācus shaded, darkened, dark, in post-classical Latin also obscure, mysterious (c400 in Augustine), of unknown origin. Compare Italian opaco (1416), Spanish opaco (16th cent.), Portuguese opaco (16th cent.). With use as noun compare classical Latin opācum a shady place, use as noun of neuter singular of opācus. The current English spelling, which is rare before the 19th cent., is after French opaque. Quot. ?1440 at sense A. 1a apparently shows an isolated early borrowing.
