Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin orale, oralis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin orale ecclesiastical stole (7th cent.), nun's veil (9th cent.), use as noun of neuter singular of oralis oral adj.The Latin word was earlier borrowed into Old English as orel, orl robe, garment, mantle, veil.
Roman Catholic Church. Now rare and historical.
A veil, covering the face and chest and falling upon the shoulders, worn by the Pope during certain ceremonies. Cf. fanon n. 2.

1844 A. W. Pugin Gloss. Eccl. Ornament 120 Georgius says that the fanon or phanon worn by the Pope, is the same as the orale, and is a veil of four colours in stripes.
1849 D. Rock Church our Fathers I. v. 466 The Roman pontiff..vested..in what is called the fanon now but formerly the ‘Orale’.
1910 Encycl. Brit. I. 854/2 A vestment peculiar to the popes, the fanone..also called the orale.
