Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Ornithodelphia.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Ornithodelphia, subclass name (H. M. D. de Blainville) < ornitho- ornitho- comb. form + ancient Greek δελϕύς womb (see monodelph n.) + scientific Latin -ia -ia suffix2, so named on account of the resemblance of the reproductive organs to those of birds. Compare French ornithodelphes (H. M. D. de Blainville, 1839). N.E.D. (1903) gives the pronunciation as (ǫɹnəiþode·lfiă) /ɔːnaɪθəʊˈdɛlfɪə/.
Zoology.
With plural agreement. A subclass or infraclass of mammals including the monotremes and sometimes also the extinct multituberculates. Cf. Prototheria n.
