单词 | orange order |
释义 | Orange Ordern. A political society promoting Protestant and Loyalist principles, esp. in Northern Ireland and North America. Cf. Orangeman n.1Originally known as the Orange Society, the society was formed in 1795 for the defence of Protestantism and the maintenance of Protestant political principles in Ireland. It was probably named from the wearing of orange badges as a symbol of allegiance to William III (William of Orange). It was brought to other countries, most notably the United States and Canada, by Irish Protestant immigrants in the 19th cent. In the early 20th cent. the Order was strengthened in the north of Ireland by its campaign to resist the Home Rule bill, and it continues to form a core of Protestant Unionist opinion.
