Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Osteopsathyrosis.
Etymology: < German Osteopsathyrosis (now Osteopsathyrose ) (A. L. Richter Organischen Knochenkrankheiten (1839) ix. 125) < French ostéopsathyrose (J. G. C. F. M. Lobstein Traité de l'anat. pathol. (1833) II. 204) < ostéo- osteo- comb. form + ancient Greek ψαθυρός friable, crumbling, of uncertain origin; perhaps related to ψαθάλλειν to scratch, rub. + -ose -osis suffix. Compare scientific Latin osteopsathyrosis (1844 or earlier).
Medicine. rare.
Fragility of the bones; any condition characterized by this, esp. osteoporosis or osteogenesis imperfecta.

1841 Brit. & Foreign Med. Rev. 12 159 Osteopsathyrosis is a term employed to designate fragility or brittleness of bone, a state induced by defective nutrition and often prevalent in old age.
