Etymology: < post-classical Latin orphanotrophia (1526 or earlier) < orphanotrophus bringing up orphans (5th cent.; < Byzantine Greek ὀρϕανοτρόϕος < ὀρϕανός orphan n. + -τροϕος , combining form < an ablaut variant of the base of τρέϕειν to nourish: see tropho- comb. form) + -ia -y suffix3. Compare earlier orphanotrophium n.
Obsolete. rare.
A hospital or asylum for orphans; an orphanage.
