Origin: From proper names. Etymons: proper names Orpheus, Arion.
Etymology: < the name of Orpheus (see Orphean adj. and n.) + Arion, the name of a famous mythical cithar-player from Methymna in Lesbos. Compare:1602 B. Jonson Poetaster iv. iii. sig. G3 Another Orpheus; an Arion, riding on the backe of a Dolphin.
A large instrument of the lute family, popular in the 16th and 17th centuries, having from six to nine pairs of metal strings played with a plectrum or the fingers.Said to have been invented c1560 by John Rose, citizen of London, living in Bridewell. See New Grove Dict. Music (1980) XIII. 869.
