Etymology: < Middle French orphelin, adjective and noun (c1135 in Old French as orfelin ; also in Anglo-Norman as orfelin ; French orphelin ), arising by dissimilation from Old French orphenin orphan, orphaned (see orphenin n. and adj.).With forms in -ling compare -ling suffix1. N.E.D. (1903) gives the pronunciation as (ǭ·ɹfĕlin) /ˈɔːfəlɪn/.
