单词 orpheonist
释义

orpheonistn.

Forms: 1800s orpheonist, 1800s orpheoniste, 1800s orphéoniste. Also with capital initial.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French orphéoniste.
Etymology: < French orphéoniste member of an Orphéon (1851 or earlier as noun; 1839 as adjective: see note) < Orphéon a choral society (1833 in this sense; < Orphée Orpheus ( < classical Latin Orpheus or ancient Greek Ὀρϕεύς : see Orphean adj. and n.) + -on (in odéon Odeon n.); compare earlier orphéon orphion n.) + -iste -ist suffix. The French Orphéon was a society for the study and performance of vocal music. The first to bear the name was established at Paris in 1833 by G. L. B. Wilhem (1781–1842). Many more were established in France during 19th cent. They toured and held competitions, performing in London in 1860. English orpheonist probably refers always to these French performers. N.E.D. (1903) gives the pronunciation as (ǭ·ɹfiŏnist) /ˈɔːfiːənɪst/.
