Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: oration v., -er suffix1.
Etymology: < oration v. + -er suffix1. N.E.D. (1903) notes that a spurious sense of ‘petitioner’ is recorded in Cent. Dict (1890) and I. K. Funk et al. Standard Dict. Eng. Lang. (1895), based on a misreading of oratours in R. W. Dixon Hist. Church Eng. I. 111 (note): see quot. 1532 at orator n. 2a.
Obsolete. rare.
A person who makes an oration; an orator or speaker.
