单词 orthide
释义

orthiden.adj.

Brit. /ˈɔːθʌɪd/, U.S. /ˈɔrˌθaɪd/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Orthida.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Orthida, order name (R. C. Moore et al. Invertebrate Fossils (1952) vi. 220, after earlier Orthoidea , suborder name (C. Schuchert & G. A. Cooper 1932, in Peabody Mus. Nat. Hist. iv. i.43)) < Orthis (see orthid n.) + -ida (see -id suffix3).Introduced in distinction to orthid n., to make it clear that the term does not just refer to the family Orthidae as now used. Compare the following earlier isolated use as plural of the genus name Orthis:1851 J. Anderson Course of Creation 41 In the shales above this coal Mr. Sharpe, the discoverer, found many fossils, as orthides, trilobites, and graptolites, most of them new species.
