Etymology: Apparently a variant of auf(e n., oaf n.¹, although the form is difficult to explain; N.E.D. (1903), dealing only with the uses in literary sources, regarded the word as ‘perhaps originating in a scribal or typographical error for auph or oaph ’, but this seems unlikely if the same word is indeed shown by the later English regional and Scottish evidence. Compare also ouphant adj.In Scottish English the diminutive forms oofet, yoofet, youfat are also recorded.
