Etymology: Variant of orchard n.It is uncertain whether quots. 17081, 17082 show a regional form or, as suggested in N.E.D. (1903) s.v., an affected form after ancient Greek ὄρχατος row of trees, garden ( < ὄρχος row of vines or fruit trees, of unknown origin).
Now chiefly English regional.
