Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French orchésographie.
Etymology: < French orchésographie (1588 in Middle French in the title of a work by Thoinot Arbeau; compare quot. 1837) < ancient Greek ὄρχησις dancing ( < ὀρχεῖσθαι to dance (see orchestra n.) + -σις -sis suffix) + French -ographie -ography comb. form. N.E.D. (1903) gives the pronunciation as (ǭɹkĭsǫ·grăfi) /ɔːkɪˈsɒɡrəfɪ/.
Obsolete.
The description or notation of dance movements and positions by means of diagrams, etc. Cf. choreography n. a.

1776 J. Hawkins in R. Southey Common-place Bk. (1851) 4th Ser. 566/2 The art of Orchesography, or denoting the several steps and motions in dancing by characters, was invented by M. Beauchamp.
1837 Southern Literary Messenger 3 A713/1 Thoinet Arbeau..printed a curious treatise entitled Orchesography, in which he was the first to note the steps of a dance in the same manner as that of music.
