Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin orthoepia; Greek ὀρθοέπεια.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin orthoepia (see note) or its etymon ancient Greek ὀρθοέπεια correctness of diction < ὀρθο- ortho- comb. form + ἔπε- , ἔπος word (see epos n.) + -ία -y suffix3.Post-classical Latin orthoepia appears in a 9th-cent. manuscript of Quintilian, earlier manuscripts having the untransliterated Greek word, and in the titles of the following early modern orthoepic works: J. Eliot Ortho-epia Gallica (1593), S. Daines Orthoepia Anglicana (1640).
