Etymology: < ortho- comb. form + geosyncline n., after German Orthogeosynklinale (H. Stille 1935, in Sitzungsber. der Preuss. Akad. der Wissensch.: Phys.-Math. Kl. 182, the source translated in quot. 1936 at main sense).
Geology. Now rare.
A linear geosyncline situated between a continental and an oceanic craton, typically comprising a miogeosyncline and an adjacent eugeosyncline.With the rise of the plate-tectonic model from the 1960s, the concept of geosynclines has been regarded as obsolete by most geologists.
