Etymology: < ortho- comb. form + -grapher comb. form, after orthography n. Compare post-classical Latin orthographus person who teachers the art of writing correctly (6th cent.), Hellenistic Greek ὀρθογράϕος correct writer (in a 3rd-cent. a.d. documentary source).Also as an editorial emendation for Shakespeare's orthography (see quot. 1600 at orthography n. 1d.
A person who spells words, esp. with a specified proficiency; (also) an expert in orthography, one who studies spelling. Cf. speller n.2 2.
