Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin Orthonectida, ortho-, Greek νηκτός, Latin -ida.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Orthonectida (A. Giard 1877, in Comptes Rendus 85 812) < ortho- ortho- comb. form + Hellenistic Greek νηκτός (see nekton n.) + scientific Latin -ida (see -id suffix3).
Zoology.
With plural agreement. A minor phylum (formerly an order) of microscopic mesozoan worms which are internal parasites of various marine invertebrates; worms of this class.

1878 A. Giard in Ann. & Mag. Nat. Hist. 1 181 (title) On the Orthonectida, a new class of animals parasitic on Echinodermata and Turbellaria.
1909 E. Haeckel in A. C. Seward Darwin & Mod. Sci. viii. 143 Monticelli discovered that this conjectural ancestral form is still preserved in certain primitive Coelenterata—Pemmatodiscus, Kunstleria, and the nearly-related Orthonectida.
1954 Q. Rev. Biol. 29 231/2 Caullery and Mesnil (1901) made a taxonomic revision of the Orthonectida.
1996 Molecular Biol. & Evol. 13 1128 The phylum Mesozoa comprises small, simply organized wormlike parasites of marine invertebrates and is composed of two classes, the Rhombozoa and the Orthonectida.
