Etymology: < scientific Latin Orthonectida (A. Giard 1877, in Comptes Rendus 85 812) < ortho- ortho- comb. form + Hellenistic Greek νηκτός (see nekton n.) + scientific Latin -ida (see -id suffix³).

With plural agreement. A minor phylum (formerly an order) of microscopic mesozoan worms which are internal parasites of various marine invertebrates; worms of this class.

1996 Molecular Biol. & Evol. 13 1128 The phylum Mesozoa comprises small, simply organized wormlike parasites of marine invertebrates and is composed of two classes, the Rhombozoa and the Orthonectida.
