Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin orthopnoicus; Greek ὀρθοπνοικός.
Etymology: < classical Latin orthopnoicus (in Pliny as noun, denoting a person suffering from orthopnoea, in post-classical Latin from 4th cent. as adjective, of animals: compare quot. 1748), or its etymon ancient Greek ὀρθοπνοικός connected with orthopnoea, in Hellenistic Greek also a person suffering from orthopnoea < ὀρθόπνοια orthopnoea n. + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare French orthopnoïque affected with orthopnoea (a1672), relating to orthopnoea (1838). Compare also asthmatic adj.In the form orthopnoeic probably influenced by orthopnoea n.
