Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Orchestrion.
Etymology: < German Orchestrion (late 18th cent.: see note below) < Orchester (early 18th cent.; < French orchestre orchestre n.) + -ion (compare Akkordion accordion n.). Compare French orchestrion (1834 in this sense; earlier in this form denoting a kind of piano-organ invented in 1791 by Thomas Anton Kunz (1756–1830), Czech composer, pianist, and inventor), Italian orchestrion (1834 in this sense).The original orchestrion was developed by Georg Joseph Vogler (1749–1814), German organist, composer, and priest, and completed in 1790.
Music. Now historical.
(a) A keyboard instrument constructed so as to imitate various other musical instruments. Obsolete. (b) A mechanical instrument, resembling a barrel organ but of more elaborate construction, producing sounds intended to imitate the effect of an orchestra.
