Order of the Golden Fleece n. [compare Spanish orden del Toisón de Oro, orden de Tusón (both early 16th cent.)] an order of chivalry instituted on 29 January 1430 by Philip the Good, duke of Burgundy, in honour of his marriage to Isabella of Portugal; the badge or insignia representing or demonstrating membership of this. Also Knight of the Golden Fleece: a member of this order.Following the War of the Spanish Succession (1700–14), the order was divided into Spanish and Austrian branches.
