Etymology: < ostraco- comb. form + -derm comb. form. In sense A. 1 after scientific Latin Ostracodermi, suborder name (T. Gill Arrangem. Families Fishes (1872) 1). In sense A. 2 after scientific Latin Ostracodermi, subclass name (E. D. Cope 1889, in Amer. Naturalist 23 852). Compare earlier ostracodermous adj.
