Etymology: < French ostréiculture (1859 in the passage translated in quot. 1861; also as ostréoculture , 1863) < classical Latin ostrea oyster n. + French -i- -i- connective + -culture -culture comb. form.In form ostreaculture probably after classical Latin ostrea . In form ostréoculture perhaps after forms in -o- connective, although compare French ostréoculture (see above).
The breeding of oysters for food or pearls.Used chiefly with reference to oyster-breeding in France.
