单词 orthostade
释义

orthostaden.

Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ὀρθοστάδιον.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ὀρθοστάδιον < ὀρθο- ortho- comb. form + στάδιος standing (see stadium n.).Ancient Greek ὀρθοστάδιον is attested at Aristophanes Lysistrata 45. The ancient commentators appear to have understood it (probably rightly) to mean a woman's tunic, worn so as to hang straight (rather than loosely draped). Association with post-classical Latin recta ‘straight’, used for a garment (e.g. in Isidore) may have influenced the way in which the word was understood. N.E.D. (1903) gives the pronunciation as (ǭ·ɹþosteid) /ˈɔːθəʊsteɪd/.
Greek History. Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
A long loose tunic, ungirded so as to hang in straight folds.
