Etymology: < classical Latin orthostata vertical post, upright (Vitruvius), or its etymon ancient Greek ὀρθοστάτης upright shaft, pillar, building stone laid with the longest edge vertical < ὀρθο- ortho- comb. form + -στατης -stat comb. form1.
Archaeology.
An upright stone or slab, either forming part of a structure or set in the ground as a monument.
