Origin: A borrowing from German, combined with English elements. Etymons: ortho- comb. form, tectonic adj., German Orthotektonik.
Etymology: < ortho- comb. form + tectonic adj. With sense 1 compare German Orthotektonik, noun (H. Stille Einführung in den Bau Amerikas (1940) i. 9).
Geology.
1. Relating to or formed by a kind of deformation associated with an orthogeosyncline, producing complicated systems of fold belts (such as those of the Alps) and characterized by much magmatism and lateral thrusting; cf. paratectonic adj. 2. Now rare.
