Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ὀρθότης.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ὀρθότης correctness, rightness < ὀρθός straight (see ortho- comb. form) + -της, suffix forming nouns.The English uses of orthotes appear to refer to the theory, which Plato presents in the Cratylus, that all words have ‘orthotes’, that is, appropriateness, to the thing they signify. N.E.D. (1903) gives the pronunciation as (ǭ·ɹþotīz) /ˈɔːθəʊtiːz/.
