Etymology: < orycto- comb. form + ancient Greek γνωστικός relating to knowledge (see gnostic adj.), after German oryctognostisch (1794 or earlier). Compare post-classical Latin oryctognosticus (1798 or earlier), French oryctognostique (1829 or earlier). Compare slightly later oryctognosy n.
Obsolete.
