Etymology: < Anglo-Norman orfevre, orfever, orfevere, etc., and Middle French orfevre, etc., goldsmith (c1210 in Old French; French orfèvre ) < or gold (see or n.1) + fevre fever n.2 Compare classical Latin aurifex aurifex n., post-classical Latin aurifaber (frequently 1086–1552 in British sources).It is uncertain whether the following should be taken as showing the Middle English or the Anglo-Norman word:1305 in G. Otto Handwerkernamen im Mittelengl. (1938) 27 Orfevre.1362 in F. Collins Reg. Freemen York (1897) I. 57 Johannes del Forth, orfeuer.1421 Inquisition Misc.
