However, the antiquary and Anglo-Saxon scholar William Lambarde in Archaionomia (1568) f. 126, next to the words ‘quod dicitur ceapgeld’ (in Laws of William I), adds in the margin ‘al. orfgyld, quod idem est’ (ed. 1644 omits this); he may have had the authority of a lost manuscript for this word.
