单词 oscillate
释义

oscillatev.

Brit. /ˈɒsᵻleɪt/, U.S. /ˈɑsəˌleɪt/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin ōscillāt-, ōscillāre.
Etymology: < classical Latin ōscillāt-, past participial stem (compare -ate suffix3) of ōscillāre to swing < oscillum (or ōscillum ) something that moves to and fro, a swing, of unknown origin (see note). Compare French osciller (1751). Compare earlier oscillation n.It has been suggested that classical Latin oscillum (or ōscillum ) a swing represents a spec. use or development of ōscillum a small mouth (in botanical use), a small face (applied to a mask left to swing in the breeze) < ōs mouth (see oral adj.) + -cillum, neuter of -cillus, diminutive suffix.
