1835 Rec. Gen. Sci. 1 98 He [sc. M. Breschet] has likewise detected in the sacs of the labyrinth in man and vertebrated animals, concretions which he terms otolites and otoconies.

1836–9 Todd's Cycl. Anat. & Physiol. II. 567/2 Otokonies..found in the sacculus vestibuli of the ears of Cephalopods.

1839 Brit. & Foreign Med. Rev. 8 81 ‘For the sake of greater precision and perspicuity in our descriptions,’ says M. Breschet, ‘we have given the name of Otoconies..to the concretions which are pulverulent, and the name of Otolites..to the solid stony concretions.’
