Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek οὐσία.
Etymology: < ancient Greek οὐσία substance, essence, in Byzantine Greek also in theological sense (4th cent.) < ὀντ- , stem of present participle of εἶναι to be (see be v.) + -ία -ia suffix1. In sense 2 after use by the German philosopher M. Heidegger, who gives the word in its Greek form.
