Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French ouster la mayne.
Etymology: < Law French ouster la mayne, ouster le main, ouster le mayn, use as noun of Anglo-Norman ouster la main to relinquish possession of < ouster oust v. + la , feminine definite article + main hand (see main n.3). Compare post-classical Latin amovere manum to withdraw restraint from, release from possession (14th cent. in British sources). Compare ouster n.1The substitution of the masculine definite article le for the feminine in Law French is perhaps due to confusion with the masculine noun demesne (see demesne n.); compare mains n.
