Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin oss- , -ite suffix1.
Etymology: < classical Latin oss-, os bone (see os n.1) + -ite suffix1; apparently coined by Joseph P. Leidy (1823–91), U.S. zoologist and palaeontologist (see quot. 1865). N.E.D. (1903) gives the pronunciation as (ǫ·səit) /ˈɒsaɪt/.
Geology. Obsolete. rare.
A deposit consisting of bone fragments (largely from turtles and other marine vertebrates) cemented by phosphates, found on the Caribbean island of Sombrero.
