Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Osler.
Etymology: < the name of William Osler (1849–1919), Canadian physician.Polycythaemia rubra vera (sense Osler's disease n. (a) at sense 1) was described by Osler in 1904 ( Amer. Jrnl. Med. Sci. 128 187); hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia (sense Osler's disease n. (b) at sense 1) in 1896 (see Osler–Weber–Rendu n.); and the subcutaneous nodules of subacute bacterial endocarditis (sense 2) in 1909 ( Q. Jrnl. Med. 2 219).

1. Osler's disease n. (a) polycythaemia rubra vera (see polycythaemia n.) (rare); (b) hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia (cf. Osler–Rendu–Weber n., Osler–Weber–Rendu n.).
