Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Osmia.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Osmia, genus name (G. W. F. Panzer Kritische Revision der Insektenfaune Deutschlands (1806) II. 230) < ancient Greek ὀσμή smell, odour (see osmo- comb. form¹) + scientific Latin -ia -ia suffix¹.The name is thought to have been given in the mistaken belief that the bees have a discernible smell, as is the case with some other genera.
