Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Osmia.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Osmia, genus name (G. W. F. Panzer Kritische Revision der Insektenfaune Deutschlands (1806) II. 230) < ancient Greek ὀσμή smell, odour (see osmo- comb. form1) + scientific Latin -ia -ia suffix1.The name is thought to have been given in the mistaken belief that the bees have a discernible smell, as is the case with some other genera.
Entomology.
A genus of solitary bees (mason bees) of the family Megachilidae, many of which nest in burrows or cells constructed from earth or chewed plant material bonded with saliva; (also osmia) a bee of this genus. Frequently with distinguishing word.
